What is health?

Health, as defined by the WHO (World Health Organisation)is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of diseases

But now a days are we really healthy? NO! Maybe from outside we shall look healthy but actually we are not. Everyone or the other are suffering from indigestion or diabetes or high blood pressure or arthritis or cancer etc. Do we have our full body check up regularly? No! We usually have it done only when we have some health problems! Otherwise we don’t visit a doctor on a regular basis.

Now do you know what the above mentioned diseases called? They are called LIFESTYLE DISEASES!

Why they are called LIFESTYLE DISEASES?

They are called lifestyle diseases because these diseases are created by the lifestyle we lead!

We don’t have any idea that our body is just like a machine. In fact it is a very complicated machine! Just like a car needs petrol to run our body also needs some fuel to run. What is this fuel needed by our body to run smoothly?

There are 6 essential nutrients needed for the body to run smoothly.


Essential nutrients are compounds that the body can’t make or can make in insufficient quantity. According to the WHO these nutrients must come from food, and they’re vital for disease prevention, growth, and good health.

While there are many essential nutrients, they can be divided into two categories.1) MACRONUTRIENTS and 2) MICRONUTRIENTS.

Macronutrients are eaten in large amounts and include the primary building blocks of your diet.They are protein, carbohydrates, and fat. These provide your body with energy.

Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients, They are taken in small amount So there are are six main groups of essential micronutrients and macronutrients.
